On this page, you'll learn everything you need to know about DGUV Regulation 3, the requirements for companies, and what to consider when conducting the testing.

Who has to be tested according to DGUV Regulation 3?

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Act (Section 3 (1) ArbSchG), every employer is obligated to take measures to protect their employees. This includes the regular inspection of electrical systems and equipment. This regulation applies to companies of all sizes as well as public institutions.

The goal is to prevent potential hazards such as electrical accidents or fires. The tests must be carried out at specific intervals and documented.

DGUV V3 test intervals for electrical VDE testing

Determining DGUV V3 inspection intervals is a central element of VDE testing. The Occupational Safety and Health Act and DGUV Regulation 3 require employers to take appropriate measures to ensure occupational safety. This includes the timely inspection of electrical systems and equipment.

Recommendations for determining inspection periods

TRBS 1201 provides guidance for typical inspection intervals:

  • Offices (mobile equipment): every 24 months

  • Workshops/Production: at least annually, more often in case of heavy use

  • Stationary equipment (e.g. air conditioning systems): every 48 months

  • Damp/wet areas: at least annually

The risk assessment decides in each individual case which deadlines apply.

Example guidelines (excerpt):

Areas / Operating resources | Equipment (months) | Plant (months) | Machinery (months)

  • Construction sites | 3 | 12 | 12

  • Commercial kitchens | 12 | 24 | 12-24

  • Schools | 12 | 24 | 12-24

  • Offices/Retail | 24 | 24-48 | 12-48

  • Hospitals | 12-24 | 24-48 | 12-48

Portable devices:

  • Office: every 6–24 months (depending on error rate)

  • Workshop/construction site: every 3–12 months

Fixed installations:

  • General: 48 months

  • Damp room/Group 700 DIN VDE 0100: 12 months

  • Residual current devices: 6 months to daily

Importance of deadlines

Failure to meet deadlines may result in legal consequences and liability in the event of a claim. Insurers require valid proof of inspection when settling claims. Legally compliant documentation in accordance with DGUV Regulation 3 is therefore essential.
